Tips for Healthy Living

Healthy Eating

Food is the fuel that keeps your body running. Think of it as the gasoline that keeps your engine running. If you put bad gas in your car, it does not run well. If your diet is one of mostly junk food, your body won't run well either.

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away". There is much truth in that saying. Eating five or more fruits and vegetables a day and less saturated fat can improve your health and may also reduce your cancer and other chronic disease risk.

Maintaining a healthy weight

Obesity is at epidemic levels in the United States and it is getting worse yearly. People who are overweight or obese are at increased risk for many health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. The best way to deal with this problem is prevention. As college students you have a wonderful opportunity to eat a balanced diet, eat healthy portions, get more exercise, and take care of health concerns before they become chronic problems.

Keep Moving

60 percent of American adults do not get enough exercise! The suggested amount of exercise is 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. That's it.... 30 Minutes a day! It does not even have to be 30 consecutive minutes. Exercise is a habit that you can develop. It does not take a lot of money or time. You can walk, jog, dance, use the stairs instead of an elevator, walk to class instead of taking the shuttle or anything that you can think of that keeps you moving.

BE SMOKE-FREE

Smoking triples the risk of dying from heart disease when you are middle aged. Smoking is directly linked to cancer and lung disease and heart disease.

If you smokeer, stop now. If you don't smoke, don't start and don't even try.

Get routine Exams and Screenings

These screenings include sexually transmitted diseases, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, skin cancer, testicular cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. When problems are found early, the chances for successful treatment and cure are much better. Routine exams and screening can help save lives.

Women need to have STD screening, gyn care annually, do breast self exams monthly, and be proactive about contraceptive choices.

Men need to have STD screening, do testicular self exam monthly and be proactive about contraceptive choices.

Immunizations

They are not just for children. Many immunizations are given during infancy and childhood; however, some need to be repeated (booster doses) as you get older. Some vaccines, like the meningitis vaccine, are given the first time when you are a young adult. As college students you are well aware of the state requirement for immunizations for measles and German measles.

Hepatitis B is a very important immunization for college aged people. Hep B is an STD that can be prevented, but not cured. Tetanus vaccine needs a booster dose every ten years (sooner if you get a bad laceration or puncture wound). If you are planning a trip to another country it is very important to see a health care provider for information about vaccines that are needed for the country you are visiting.

Manage stress

College can be stressful on many levels. It is a time of change.... Change in living situation, independence, work requirements, time management, career choices, responsibility... the list goes on. Balancing your obligations to school, jobs and family can be very challenging. Protect your mental and physical health by developing techniques that help you manage your stress. It will be invaluable as you move on to adulthood. For more information, check out the Stress Management page of Granoff Health Services website.

Be Safe- Protect yourself

What do you think of when you read "be safe- protect yourself"? Do you think of using a condom, wearing sunscreen, using a seatbelt, wearing a helmet? It is all of these and more. It is everything from washing your hands to prevent the spread of cold virus to being safe in your relationships. It is having an awareness of your family history and health risks and knowing how your lifestyle defines your health and wellness. It is keeping out of dangerous situations and managing stress. It is a process that you will continue throughout your life.

Be good to yourself

Get enough sleep, know how to relax when you have had a stressful day, eat right, and find time to do activities that are enjoyable.

It is important to take care of you.
Pay attention to your health and make healthy choices in everyday living.
And Don't forget to wash your hand before eat.
